Overview

Spesial Sambal SS @ TTDI stands out as a beacon of authentic Indonesian cuisine nestled in the vibrant heart of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. This restaurant brings a genuine slice of Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage, with a focus sharper than most—the sambal. For those who cherish the fiery, complex flavors of traditional sambal, this place offers a deep dive into bold and layered spicy condiments that elevate every dish.

The menu showcases classic Indonesian mainstays like Ayam Goreng, Talapia Goreng, Bebek Goreng, and an impressive variety of sambals ranging from Sambal Bajak to Sambal Matah Kecombrang. Each dish feels thoughtfully crafted, balancing heat with rich, earthy undertones. Notably, the sambals pack a punch but remain adaptable for guests who prefer milder heat, making the experience inclusive yet true to its roots.

Vegetarians and vegans will appreciate the authentic options such as Tauhu Tempe Mix and the expertly marinated grilled tofu and tempeh. These plant-based choices highlight Indonesian flavors without compromise, alongside fresh, vibrant juices like their creamy avocado jus, which adds a cooling counterpoint to the spiciness.

The atmosphere is casual and inviting. Its spacious, clean interior offers ample seating, ideal for families, friends, or anyone seeking comfort food with a hint of adventure. The service complements this setting—friendly and attentive, albeit occasionally requiring a touch of language navigation for vegan customization. Nevertheless, the staff’s warmth enhances the overall dining experience.

One aspect that shines is the balance Spesial Sambal strikes between authenticity and local adaptation. Indonesian comfort food here maintains its origin flavors but is thoughtfully adjusted to suit Kuala Lumpur’s diverse palate, with just a slight sweetening to round off the robust sambal heat. This makes it approachable without losing its identity.

Delighting regulars and newcomers alike, this spot thrives as a go-to destination for Indonesian food lovers, especially those craving the unmistakable taste of sambal paired with fried, grilled, or fresh ingredients. Whether it's a quick meal or a leisurely gathering, Spesial Sambal SS @ TTDI serves an honest, flavorful experience rooted in tradition but presented with local hospitality sensibility.

This Indonesian restaurant has a lot of authentic options as it is a branch of restaurant originating in Indonesia. They have quite a few things that can be made vegan on request. The food is pretty cheap as well as potentially very spicy. The flavours of the sambals are quite intense as they are spicy. They have a small selection of plain fruits, papaya, honey dew melon and watermelon too. I just ordered the fried tofu and tempeh, the asam boi from here is pretty good too, we got the avocado juice which doesn't have any cows milk. You kinda need someone who speaks Indonesian to navigate their vegan options, or you can point to the pictures in this review

I came to Spesial Sambal because I was curious to try how it tastes here in Malaysia, this brand is one of my go-to comfort foods back home in Indonesia, and I’ve visited their branches in almost every city there. I ordered ayam goreng, hati ampela goreng, udang goreng tepung, sotong goreng tepung, sambal bawang tomato, and fried cabbage. Everything was cooked well, crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. The sambal had that familiar punch I love, especially the tomato sambal which brought me right back to eating at home. The atmosphere is casual and clean, and the service was friendly. It really made me feel at home, and I’m so happy I got to enjoy my comfort food while in Malaysia. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic Indonesian sambal dishes!

I was craving for Indo food so my friends brought me here. And I must say that the food was EXCELLENT!!! Yaampun It was sooo good I was really happy and satisfied! As a vegetarian, there were some good options. Like the tofu and tempeh bakar, it was really marinated well and so flavourful, the soup was just bursting with flavours too! It’s like sour, sweet and a hint of spice. However you got to be careful with the spice, it can get really spicy! So remember to tell them to make it less spicy. Anyhow, I can’t wait to come back! Eeps!

Went here for a dinner around dusk. Mind you it's not like a typical ayam penyet or ayam gepuk restaurant that we usually find. It is more focused on the spiciness of the sambal. It's a bit raw and not all people will like the sambal, only a few segment of people will like the foods here especially the sambal. The restaurant is huge, lot of seating available. The restaurant is clean and comfy. Suitable to bring family and friends for hangout or gathering. The service is good, waiting time is not that long. The worker also nice and friendly. Well the foods I would say not everyone will like it. We do like but for me there are also other restaurants that have better taste than here without undermining the quality here. The portion is fair and the price is a bit high for me. There are a set which a bit cheaper but there were very limited customization you can made. If you are looking for a total dining experience, it is better to order separately and you can pick the different type of sambal, dishes and side according to your preference. The squid is very good for me.

Gonna be one of my go-to restaurants if I miss Indonesian foods. They manage to maintain the authenticity of the taste (with a bit tendency to the sweeter side, perhaps to adapt to local palate) and ambiance. Although, the price is (obviously) higher here than in Indonesia. Lol. Parking is limited. There's paid parking in the TTDI market.

Special Sambal TTDI is a great spot for those craving authentic Indonesian flavors. They offer a variety of Indonesian dishes paired with their signature special sambal, which brings a bold, spicy kick that truly stands out. The sambal is well balanced rich, fragrant, and a perfect match for their dishes. While the current menu is already enjoyable, there’s room for improvement by expanding the variety of dishes and sambal types. Adding more classic Indonesian specialties and a wider selection of sambals would not only cater to different spice preferences but also make the dining experience more exciting for repeat customers. Overall, if you’re looking for a taste of Indonesia in TTDI, this place delivers and with a few more menu options, it could easily become a go to destination for Indonesian food lovers.
